Vestibular rehabilitation includes a combination of procedures which are performed to assess, treat and evaluate the vestibular system related problems. Vestibular system impairment can cause variety of signs and symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, nystagmus and stability of vision. Dizziness word is used for variety of sensations such as spinning, light headedness, swaying, disorientation. Vertigo is a type of dizziness. BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) BPPV is one of the most common vestibular impairment which is seen in more than 80% of the vestibular impairment population. What happens in this condition is that, the crystals which are present in the canals of our vestibular system escape from its place and they move freely in the canal. This sends a false information to our brain about the position of our head in relation to our surrounding. This can cause nausea, vertigo and loss of balance and which is really scary for an individual. Many individuals who has Whiplash, Head injury or Concussion can also have vestibular impairment. BPPV can be treated by assessing it properly and performing specific maneuvers to reposition the crystals as well as by following an exercise program.
